President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden took a stroll to a local Washington eatery Friday, just one day after law enforcement officers shot and killed an unarmed woman who attempted to breach the White House security gates.
“I’m going to get something to eat,” President Obama told reporters.
After weeks of having the Capitol on edge over incidents from the mass shooting at Washington’s Navy Yard to the high-speed car chase on Thursday, the nation’s top leaders signaled a sense of safety amid the chaos. Flanked by a small army of Secret Service officers and staffers, Obama and Biden walked on foot to the sandwich shop Taylor Gourmet.
The president picked up the tab, and praised the eatery for offering a 10% discount (plus a cookie!) while the Capitol is strapped under its fourth day of government shutdown. Earlier in the day, House Speaker John Boehner blamed the president for the shutdown, chiding Obama that it “isn’t some damn game.”
“I”m happy to have negotiations with Boehner, but we can’t do it with a gun held to our heads,” the president said Friday, according to pool reports.
