Protesters shouted at Sen. Ted Cruz multiple times as spoke at the Values Voter Summit in Washington Friday morning.

While Cruz railed against the White House and Democrats amid the country’s third week of a federal shutdown (which the Texas senator had a small hand in), hecklers interrupted him, including some who asked about his opposition to a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

“It seems that President Obama’s paid political operatives are out in force today,” Cruz said after one heckler was removed. “You know why? Because the men and women in this room scare the living daylights out of him.”

Eventually, a group of remaining protesters stood up and began to heckle the senator while the crowd around them chanted, “USA! USA!”

Cruz joked at one point: “I’m actually glad the president’s whole political staff is here instead of actually doing mischief in the country.”
