From the government shutdown to the annual Values Voters Summit we’re talking about the world according to Ted. Join us Sunday for everything you need to know about the real cause of the government shutdown. (And have you met Big Freedia yet?)

The annual Values Voter Summit kicked off on Friday, and boasted quite a number of right wing headliners. Values mavericks like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio espoused fierce anti-Obama rhetoric and rallied against the principles of the Democratic Party. All the while, highlighting the values – of course – held dearly by the religious right. Usually, the event is perceived by the media as a comic display by right-wing so called “whacko birds,” but what happens when those individuals manage to shut down the government? On Sunday’s Melissa Harris-Perry, our host and panel will re-examine the “values” thesis and how the Tea Party minority has usurped the power from mainstream Republicans.

What can Monica Lewinsky tell us about Ted Cruz? Turns out the American people prefer substance over spectacle. Host Melissa Harris-Perry will discuss UCLA political scientist John Zaller’s study that provides the empirical evidence, and what this means for Tea Party front man Cruz.

As the Democrats and Republicans continue to blame each other for the Shutdown, another theory suggests that racism is actually at fault. Dating back to the New Deal, systematic racism in our political process has in fact allowed for the rise of the Tea Party. Join us on Sunday for an in depth conversation on race and the origins of the government shutdown.

Speaking of the Shutdown, DC Mayor Vincent Gay will join us to talk about the effects of the ahutdown on our nation’s capital.

Have you met Big Freedia? The New Orleans-based Queen of Bounce will be in #erdland to talk about her new reality show and setting the twerking world record.

Be sure to read what we’ve linked above, and watch Melissa Harris-Perry Sunday at 10 a.m. EST on MSNBC! Also, don’t forget to join us on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #nerdland.
