WAXHAW, N.C. -- Someone vandalized a local military memorial in Waxhaw.
The hope is whoever stole a statue from that Veterans Memorial Wall of Honor on Main Street is caught or gives it back. The statue isn't big or expensive. It's 18 inches tall and cost about 40 bucks, police said. It means everything to Kenny Hawkins, because the memorial honors his dad, Bill, who served in the Navy from 1957-1960. "I feel pretty proud about it," Hawkins said. The problem is it obviously meant nothing to whoever stole it. Someone knocked it off the memorial's bricks and took it. There are no pieces laying on the ground. "For somebody to come up there and do something like that, it just kind of burns me up," Hawkins said. "They have no respect for the military or the United States of America. Maybe they were out of money and thought they could go out and sell it." The vandalism happened roughly the same time kids vandalized a nearby park over the weekend, and it is believed they could be responsible. However, the Waxhaw Police Department is not investigating this. A local women's club cares for the memorial and chose not to file a police report. Instead, the women's club hopes whoever took it brings it back, police said.
