YAKIMA, WA. -- Beware of medical scammers in the Yakima area. On Monday, police say three thieves went into a home in West Valley posing as nurses.
As one thief created a distraction, the other two went around the house stealing important items. It was in an area like this that the scammers targeted an elderly resident. There are a lot of similarities between this case and another we told you about just last week from the Sheriff's Office.
Both cases involved 3 middle aged Hispanic men going into an elderly person's home, pretending to be apart of a medical organization. In this case, from the Yakima police department, the men claimed to be from a local doctor's office and told the person they needed to check their medical equipment.
Police say it's terrible to see people target a vulnerable group like the elderly.
"Pretty sad that somebody would specifically target the elderly," Mike Bastinelli, Yakima Police Department spokesperson said. "And try to take from them. It really is sad that there are people out there that will do this, but they're out there."
Police say the thieves were driving a white van. They don't know if the two cases are related yet but are looking into it.
Police also say if you are answering your door to someone who claims to be a medical professional, make sure they have identification, drive a company car and call beforehand, especially if you are an elderly person.
