Investigators are searching for the person responsible for a possible hit and run. Shortly after 10pm Tuesday night, 59-year-old Peggy Ann Cain was found lying on the side of Highway 45 in Cross. She transported and pronounced dead at the hospital.
Orange paint and skid marks mark the place where Cain was hit.
"She'd come in the Monkey Bar, and just sit there. But she didn't drink at all," said Ronnie Parker who was having lunch at Henry's Bait and Tackle in Cross. "I was talking with her last night. About 10-15 minutes, and she got up and went outside... She's got a dog that can't hear. She didn't have it on a leash. Evidently it ran out in the road, and she went to run after it and got hit."
An investigator confirms that scenario is what they are hearing at this point as well. Investigators spent part of Wednesday afternoon at the nearby Canal One Stop store trying to gather additional information.
Ronnie hopes that work pays off. "I think whoever did it, I hope they catch them. I hope they do. They deserve what they get."
The Highway Patrol says they do not have the make and model of the suspect vehicle. However, they are asking the public to keep an eye out for any vehicle with front passenger side damage. There could be damage to the headlight, fender and side mirrors.
Since this incident happened less than 24 hours ago, investigators are trying to gather any information they can about what happened. If you have any information, call Crimestoppers at 843-554-1111.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
