For country music musicians, attempting to “cross over” into the pop music world is a difficult endeavor. Only few can achieve success and maintain it, Kenny Rogers being one of the most famous stories.
Kenny Rogers was a country singer with humble beginnings. Over the course of his career, Rogers has released over 61 albums, with over 13 number one songs and over 105 million records sold.
His latest album, “Back to the Wall” was released in September 2003, after taking a year and a half in the making, it became an instant hit.
“Music is what I am,” Rogers said in an interview with MSNBC's Deborah Norville. “Everything else is what I do.”
Rogers has an assortment of awards which illustrate the success of his career including: 3 Grammys, 11 People’s Choice Awards, 18 American Music Awards, 8 Academy of Country Music Awards, 5 Country Music Association Awards, the Horatio Alger Award and Recording Industry Association of American’s Diamond Award.
What little know is that Rogers is also an accomplished photographer, author, actor and humanitarian.
He has written many books on photography, including the yet to be released, “Faces and Places” and an assortment of children’s books as well.
He starred as Brady Hawks in “The Gambler” and made a guest appearance on CBS’s hit show, “Touched by an Angel.” The theme song for this classic was Rogers' hit song, “Buy Me a Rose.”
He tested his talents in an off-Broadway production of “Christmas from the Heart” and created organizations such as the World Hunger Media Awards and the Athens Area Homeless Center.
However, Rogers’s first love is music, and he continues to travel the country performing live concerts.
Family remains a priority as well. On July 6, Rogers and his wife Wanda, welcomed twin boys, Justin and Jordan into the world. He already has three children from ages 22-44.
“It's such a blessing for me because this came in a time of my life, where I really wasn't sure how I was going to handle the last part of my life,” Rogers said.
