The Mount Marty Lancers' women's soccer team took on Great Plains Athletic Conference opponent Doane on Saturday afternoon and found themselves in the loss column 8-0 ninety minutes later.
The Lancers struggled from the fourth minute on, as the offense could not possess the ball for any period of time and the defense played all game long. "We spent the entire day defending and we turned the ball over too quickly on offense," expressed head coach Shane Miner. "When you defend for ninety minutes, you end up giving up a lot of goals."
Rachel Chlupacek had the first opportunity to get a goal three minutes into the game, but Doane's goal keeper Shannon Sullivan snagged the ball. Since then Doane controlled every aspect of the game, out shooting the Lancers 26-2. Doane's Callie Humphrey scored the games first goal that found the left corner of the Lancers net.
After clearing out a corner kick of by Mount Marty, Doane kept the pressure on the Lancers defense. Kim Bluejacket had a shot on goal on a header on the corner kick, followed by another shot on goal before she found her first goal of the day on a shot the drilled into the left corner of the net. The Lancers quickly found themselves in a 2-0 whole halfway through the first half.
Only moments later, Bluejacket received her second goal of the day on another shot that hit the its mark in the left corner of the goal, giving Doane a 3-0 lead.
The Lancers second scoring opportunity came for them on a 25 yard shot on goal by Kalina Carlson, that sailed over the crossbar. With time winding down, Humphrey was looking for her second goal of the game as she found the net seconds after the whistle blew for half-time.
Mount Marty was looking to put the first half performance behind them, but Bluejacket was looking to get another shot at the goal. Bluejacket quickly made the game 4-0 when she put the ball down the middle of the goal over the outstretched hands of Lancers goal keeper Michaela Klimes.
After two shots by Doane's Janelle Belina, Humphrey found her second goal of the day on a diving kick that hit the right corner of the goal. The Lancers had a single scoring opportunity by Angel Riccobuono on a long kick outside of the box.
Humphrey made the score 6-0 when she received a hat trick on a break away that faked out the Lancers' goalkeeper on her second move.
That is when the Lancers' offense started to respond as the Rachel Chlupacek had a shot on goal followed directly by a Kalina Carlson wide left shot. Bluejacket finished her scoring for the day with a goal that found the left corner making it a 7-0 game. Lancers' Maggie Hofer had two shots on goal before Doane made their last goal, defeating the Lancers 8-0.
"It was a frustrating day," noted coach Miner. "We had some big letdowns as a team and gave up a ton of goals because of it."
The Lancers were led by Rachel Chlupacek with two shots on goal along with Kalina Carlson with two shots. Michaela Klimes had 22 saves while giving up eight goals. Doane was led by Kim Bluejacket with four goals on 11 shots on goal along with Callie Humphrey scoring three goals on six shots on goals. Shannon Sullivan had four saves on the night for Doane.
The Lancers drop to 0-3 in the conference and 3-6 overall while Doane advances to 2-1 in the conference and 7-3 for the season. Mount Marty's next game is at Sioux Falls against the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday, Oct. 2.
