Amazon.com said that its Web site experienced slowdowns for much of the day Monday but was running normally by evening.
Spokeswoman Patty Smith said the world’s largest Internet retailer began experiencing “a slowness” around 8:30 a.m. PT, causing problems for some customers trying to access the Web site or buy items.
The problem was fixed by 5 p.m., Smith said.
Amazon technicians weren’t clear what had caused the problem, but Smith said the Seattle-based company typically wouldn’t disclose such information in any case.
“It’s a very complex site that we have and on rare occasions it does experience problems,” she said.
