A Russian helicopter crashed Thursday in Chechnya, killing at least 12 servicemen and injuring two others, the Interfax news agency reported.

A preliminary report said that the helicopter hadn't come under hostile fire, but crashed after hitting a power line.

The helicopter belonging to Russia's Interior Ministry crashed in the Urus-Martan region in southwestern Chechnya, said a spokesman for the regional branch of Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry.

Russian forces battling rebels in Chechnya have lost a number of helicopters to ground fire, but many others crashed due to pilot error or equipment malfunctions.
