Man shoots ex-girlfriend then himself outside State Farm in Portage

The facility is the insurance claim central office and is located at 5564 Portage Road near the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport.

Police tell 24 Hour News 8 that 28-year-old Demont MacDonald drove from Grand Rapids to the State Farm office, where his ex-girlfriend works. They say he then shot the woman, 28-year-old Tobi Meyer, in the parking lot then shot himself.

MacDonald and Meyer were taken to a hospital, suffering from gunshot wounds to their heads. He later died while she underwent surgery.

Police say the couple had just broken up.

"At this time we don't know what the reason was. What we seem to piece together is that they were a boyfriend-girlfriend type relationship. She recently moved away to another city, so...," Deputy Chief Daniel Mills of the Portage Police Department told 24 Hour News 8.

Meyer had recently moved to Battle Creek after living in Wyoming where MacDonald lived.
