JPMorgan Chase & Co. has been talking with dozens of U.S banks about potential acquisitions, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

Attributing its report to executives and other people familiar with the conversations, the newspaper said Harold Pote, the bank's vice chairman of retail financial services, has been meeting with leaders of financial institutions.

The paper said that people familiar with JPMorgan's thinking said that the company is more likely to acquire a regional bank rather than a large financial institution.

The Journal said that some analysts and investors have concerns that JPMorgan, which acquired Bank One Corp. last year in a large deal, may be too hasty in getting back into the merger game.
