Two U.S. soldiers were killed and two wounded in Afghanistan’s restive southern province of Kandahar on Thursday when a roadside bomb hit their armored vehicle, the U.S. military said.

The vehicle was part of a convoy supporting a road construction project, the U.S. military said in statement.

“These terrorists are attacking the very forces working to improve Afghanistan,” said Brigadier-General Jack Sterling, the deputy commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

The two wounded soldiers were in stable condition.

U.S. forces have suffered 42 deaths in combat in Afghanistan this year making it the worst period since they arrived to oust the Taliban in October 2001.

Clashes with Taliban and allied militants, particularly in the south and east of the country, have raised security concerns about a Sept. 18 parliamentary election but the U.S.-backed government says it will go ahead despite the violence.
