A driver trying to escape from a police officer plowed his SUV into a crowd of workers eating lunch outdoors near Times Square on Tuesday, injuring six people, including one police officer, police and witnesses said.
Pedestrians scattered in panic as the black vehicle mounted the sidewalk and crashed into a concrete planter. At least one man was seen lying apparently unconscious on the sidewalk, but police said no one was seriously hurt.
A police official said the incident started when an officer intervened after spotting the driver of the car angrily arguing with another driver.
After asking to see identification, the police officer spotted what he thought were drugs in the SUV, and its driver quickly drove off up Broadway, in the heart of Manhattan.
The SUV dragged the officer until the driver lost control, glancing off another car parked nearby and running up onto the sidewalk.
The driver of the SUV jumped out and tried to escape on foot but was stopped within a few blocks, police said. A woman passenger also was taken into custody.
