A suspected robber died after being run over by police in a high speed chase of ram raiders who had struck at jewelers Tiffany in central London on Thursday, the capital’s police force said.

A gang had tried to drive a 4x4 vehicle through the window of the branch in Sloane Square at 1.35 a.m. but officers, who had been tipped off, were lying in wait, London’s Metropolitan police force said in a statement.

One of the suspects made off in the car, two fled on a motorbike and two more left on a moped.

Shortly afterwards, the men on the moped fell off while being pursued by two unmarked police cars and although the first car swerved to miss them, they were hit by the second.

One of the men was declared dead at the scene while the other is critically ill in hospital.

In a separate incident nearby, the suspects on the motorbike collided with a parked car and were arrested as they tried to escape. The driver of the 4x4 was apprehended in west London.

The three men are in custody being questioned on suspicion of burglary offences, police said.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed of the man’s death and the Met Police has also launched an inquiry.
