Two pickup trucks collided head-on Tuesday in a crash that killed five young children and critically injured their father, authorities said.
The children and their father were in one pickup, apparently all inside the extended cab, Trooper Jeff Sevigney said. A second pickup crossed a grassy median into the southbound lane and collided with their vehicle on U.S. Highway 395.
Both drivers were transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
Jeffrey Schrock, 38, of Chewelah, the children’s father, was in surgery and in critical condition late Tuesday night, Sevigney said.
Killed in the crash were the Schrock children, Carmen, 12; Jana, 10; Corina, 8; Jerrill, 5 and Creig, 2, the trooper said.
The driver of the second truck did not suffer life-threatening injuries, Sevigney said.
The cause of the crash was under investigation. Sevigney said there was no immediate indication drugs or alcohol were involved.
