Secretary of State James A. Baker III joined “Meet the Press” on February 19, 1989 to discuss his first mission to Europe to visit the NATO allies and the Soviet Union's departure from Afghanistan. Baker said he would consult with the nation’s allies before a decision was reached on lifting trade restrictions imposed after the USSR invaded Afghanistan. Baker served as chief of staff and treasury secretary under President Ronald Reagan and secretary of state under President George H.W. Bush.Oct. 10, 2022
