In news sure to excite comic book fanboys across the internet, Marvel announced that Elodie Yung is set play the fan favorite Elektra in the second season of the Netflix series Daredevil.
In Marvel comic lore, Elektra is a shadowy martial artist of Greek descent, who gets tangled up with the titular Daredevil romantically and otherwise.
Elektra was most recently portrayed by Jennifer Garner in a 2003 Daredevil movie starring Ben Affleck. Garner reprised the role in a stand-alone Elektra movie in 2005.
Yung is of Cambodian and French descent, and is a relative newcomer to American audiences. She’s had roles in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and played a ninja in GI Joe: Retribution.
Some commentators are excited that a character steeped in martial arts is being played by an actress of color. Actress Olivia Munn recently made waves after being cast as Psylocke, another mysterious martial artist female assassin-type of character, in an upcoming X-Men movie.
The first season of Daredevil received strong reviews from critics, and, according to one source, substantial viewership on the all-digital streaming service. The second season of Daredevil is slated for release in mid-2016.
