Deputy Chief of Staff to the Secretary of State, U.S. Department of State

Hometown: Bethesda, Maryland

How did you get here? Who or what has been the greatest influence on your career?

My first job 18 years ago was working for then-Senator Joe Biden on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. That was a formative time for me and I was fortunate to have supportive mentors who guided me and served as examples of the kind of professional and public servant I hoped to become. After 11 years on Capitol Hill, I joined the Obama Administration in 2009 and have worked in various roles at the State Department and at the White House.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment during the Obama administration?

The seven years of the Obama Administration have produced extraordinary achievements in our economic recovery, preventing Iran from gaining a nuclear weapon, brokering a historic climate agreement, and normalizing relations with Cuba. Being able to play a small part in this administration has been the greatest honor of my career.

Can you describe your time working for the Obama administration in 10 words?

A privilege working with the most talented and dedicated people.

Complete the sentence: “When I’m not working, I…” chasing after my two young daughters who keep me grounded, happy and inspire me to be the best mom and person I can be.
