Muslim Americans and others took to social media to respond to President Bill Clinton’s Tuesday night speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. While telling the life story of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, President Clinton said, “If you’re a Muslim and you love America and freedom and you hate terror, stay here and help us win and make a future together. We want you.”
Some said the statement was problematic.

Others were aggravated that Muslim Americans are almost only ever mentioned in the context of terrorism.
Some pointed out that asking Muslim Americans to stay did not make sense since they are Americans and not going anywhere.
Despite the terrorism frame, some pointed out that Muslim Americans are statistically much more likely to be doctors than terrorists.
And that Muslim American kids are just American kids
Some pointed out the double standard being applied to Muslim Americans.
Some remarked on the similar way that Muslims were treated by Republicans.
One criticism from the Muslim-American community was that former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg was allowed to speak at the Democratic National Convention, even though he allowed surveillance that targeted Muslim Americans in New York City as well as the city's unconstitutional stop and frisk policies.
Still, a few were appreciative of Clinton’s words.
