Baby Doe’ Killing: Mother, Boyfriend Appear in Court in Death of Toddler

Suspect in 'Baby Doe' Killing Ordered Held Without Bond 0:52

BOSTON — A mother and her boyfriend appeared in court Tuesday in the death of a 2-year-old girl who became known as Baby Doe after her remains washed up inside a trash bag on a Boston Harbor beach.

Rachelle Bond and her boyfriend, Michael McCarthy, were charged last month in connection with the death of Bond's daughter, Bella. Both were in Dorchester District Court Tuesday, although the appearance was mostly for attorneys to discuss future logistics, because they haven't yet been indicted.

Assistant District Attorney David Deakin told the judge the defense wanted to do an autopsy for Bella, and requested funds for a pathologist to examine her body, which Judge Lisa Ann Grant granted. Bond and McCarthy will next appear in court on Nov. 19.

The girl's body was found on Deer Island in June. State authorities launched a massive investigation to find out who she was and how she died. Police finally got a tip three months later after Bond told a friend that McCarthy had killed Bella.

McCarthy's lawyer has said he knew nothing about Bella's death.
