A man living with a family in Mississippi shot a couple and three of their children early Friday morning, killing the father and a 9-year-old girl, police said Saturday.

Jimmy Lyons, 32, was arrested Friday night after Jermaine Sims, 31, and Victoria Sims, 29, and three of their children — a 6-year-old boy, a 9-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl — were shot in their Brookhaven, Mississippi, home around 12:30 a.m. CT, said Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell. Lyons admitted to the shooting and told investigators the violence was sparked by an argument, Bell told NBC News. Lyons has been charged with two counts of murder and three counts of aggravated assault.

Jermaine Sims and the 9-year-old, who, along with the other minors, is not being identified, died of their injuries in the hospital Friday. Victoria Sims and the two other children remain in critical condition, according to The Associated Press.

The exact relationship between Lyons and the family was unclear. "I’ve never seen nothing like this," said Bell, who has been in law enforcement for 34 years, adding that he has known Victoria Sims since she was a child. Brookhaven, a city of about 12,000 people, is 55 miles south of Jackson.
