Queen Elizabeth II welcomed Irish President Michael D. Higgins to Britain on Tuesday for Ireland's first state visit since the republic became independent.

Guests, who sat at a 160-seat table, included notables such as Judi Dench, Daniel Day-Lewis and, controversially, the former Irish Republican Army commander Martin McGuinness.
