Residents have accused Police Peacekeeping Unit (UPP) officers of causing the death of Douglas Rafael da Silva Pereira, 25, who was found dead inside a school nearby, according to local media.

Pereira was a well-known figure in the community, and a dancer on a television show featured on Brazil's largest channel.

Intense exchanges of gunfire were heard after police moved into the slum, the Associated Press reported, in an area only a few hundred yards from where Olympic swimming events are set to take place during the Rio 2016 Olympics.
