Actress and activist Eva Longoria will be star and produce in a new NBC comedy series, "Telenovela," about a Spanish-language soap opera star and her on-camera - as well as off-camera - drama.
"Her character will try to navigate the hysteria and high jinks that everyone must endure in putting together a daily show," said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke in a statement released Friday.
NBC ordered 13 episodes of the singlecam comedy starring Longoria as Ana Maria, "a willful but popular" soap opera diva.
Salke said there are few actresses with as much international appeal as Longoria, who is best known for her role in "Desperate Housewives" and has garnered a People's Choice Award and Alma Awards as well as a Golden Globe nomination.
