A Senate Democratic bill to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 over 30 months failed to pass after Republican opposition. GOP Senators like Florida Republican Marco Rubio have said raising the minimum wage would negatively affect small businesses that would have to cut hours or employees.

House Democratic Caucus Chair Xavier Becerra issued a statement after the bill failed to pass, saying that while Republicans blocked the vote "that would benefit 28 million hard-working Americans, Republicans in the House voted to hand over $300 billion in unpaid-for tax breaks to big corporations. Actions speak louder than words."
