Mexico Deports More Minors as Children Head to the Border

Mexico’s detention rate of Central American minors is up 49 percent since last year, according to Mexico's National Immigration Institute.

The institute says almost half of the detained 11,893 underage migrants were travelling alone or with a smuggler between January and May. Two-thirds of the detained were between 12 and 17. One third of the minors were 11-years-old or younger.

The country’s welfare agencies are being used to care for the children before they are deported, according to the institute.

However, there are accusations of inadequate facilities to handle all the minors detained, as sited in the 2014 U.S. immigration crisis.
