Laos plane crash: Aircraft reportedly ditched in Mekong river

A passenger plane on a domestic flight in Laos has crashed into the Mekong river, according to media reports.

The Bangkok Post, in neighboring Thailand, said 40 passengers were on board but there were no reports of casualties. However, a Thai television station reported that 39 people had died, according to Reuters.

Chinese state news agency, Xinhua, reported that the Lao Airlines plane crashed into the Mekong river at around 4 p.m. local time. The plane was bound for Pakse, Champassak in southern Laos, Xinhua said, citing the airline.

None of the reports could immediately be verified by NBC News.

Airline and government officials in Laos were not immediately available for comment, Reuters reported.
