He has embraced the age of social media age, but Pope Francis still has one foot in tradition, with more than 200,000 followers for his Twitter account - in Latin.

The account, which carries tweets in official language of the Holy See, was created after his election to the pontificate last year and has gradually grown in popularity.

However, the account still has a long way to go before it catches up with the Pontiff’s feeds in other languages, according to a Vatican official, Monsignor Daniel Gallagher.

Gallagher said that 3.63 million people follow Pope Francis' English-language account, while his Italian feed has 1.48 million followers.

"What zest life acquires when we allow ourselves to be filled by the love of God," the pope wrote in his most recent Latin tweet.
