Two students of Iowa State University died after members of the school’s crew club had an accident on a lake north of Ames.

The students were practicing Sunday morning at Little Wall Lake in Hamilton County when their boat capsized, the university said in a news release. Three were rescued and a dive team recovered the body of one student later in the day.

The search for the fifth student was called off Sunday night and their body was recovered early Monday with the use of "advanced sonar technology," the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.

The three students who were rescued were treated at an Ames hospital and released.

University President Wendy Wintersteen said in a release that the “Iowa State community is heartbroken to learn of this tragic accident.”

In an email to NBC News, Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Timmons declined to release further details about the deceased rowers.

The students were part of the Iowa State Crew Club, a recognized student organization. Little Wall Lake is about 15 miles north of Ames.

Iowa State University said it would conduct "an internal review of policies and procedures related to this incident" that it said could take "days or weeks."

Iowa State said the names of the deceased rowers were not yet released because families had not yet been notified.
