The uncle of Eddie Ray Routh, the ex-Marine who was convicted of murder for shooting and killing “American Sniper” Chris Kyle and another man, told jurors that his nephew wasn’t the same after serving in Iraq.

Routh was found guilty on Tuesday night. The verdict carries an automatic life sentence. The defense sought to make an insanity case and argued that Routh was in the grip of psychosis when he killed the men in February 2013.

The uncle, James Watson, told the jury: “I noticed that he had kind of lost his desire for life. He didn’t seem to find much joy in life after he came back.”

Video of the testimony was made public after the verdict. The judge blocked news organizations from airing it during the trial.
