Archive Footage Shows Beavers Parachuted From Planes in Relocation Project

Parachuting Beavers! Watch Archive Film of Relocation Project 1:12

Long lost footage from the 1950s has resurfaced showing a little-known animal relocation effort in Idaho that involved trapping and airdropping live beavers.

In an effort to deal with an overpopulation of beavers in some regions the Idaho Department of Fish and Game packed them into boxes, attached parachutes and dropped them from a plane into the wilderness.

According to Boise State Public Radio, a fish-and-game historian recently found the film, which had been mislabeled and stored in the wrong file.

But animal lovers can breathe a sigh of relief — it appears all beavers survived their flying adventures unharmed.
