Correctional officer killed inside Arkansas jail was fatally shot by man being booked, police say

Roderick Lewis was going to be held on drug and paraphernalia charges when he shot Jeremiah Story, 21, according to Arkansas State Police.

The correctional officer who was killed inside an Arkansas jail was shot by an inmate he was booking, state police said Thursday.

Roderick Lewis, 37, of North Little Rock, had been arrested by Perry County sheriff’s deputies and was going to be held on drug and paraphernalia charges when he shot Jeremiah Story, 21, according to Arkansas State Police.

"Story was shot with a pistol as he stood in a bathroom where the inmate was changing out of civilian clothes into jail issued attire," police said. "The gun reportedly used by Lewis was one he possessed when he arrived at the jail in the custody of local sheriff’s deputies."

A bystander was able to disarm Lewis, according to police. He has been charged with capital murder, and it's unclear if he has an attorney.

Story died at a nearby hospital.

The jail, located in Perryville, is about 45 miles northwest of Little Rock.
