Brian Harris was relaxing outside his Northeast D.C. home Sunday when his wallet stopped a stray bullet from seriously injuring him.
Harris, a resident of the 300 block of Adams Street NE in Edgewood, was outside his home around 8:30 p.m. drinking a cup of coffee after dinner. He said he then felt a strange sensation in his stomach.
"It felt like somebody hit me with their fist, and I got up," Harris said.
He heard about four or five shots, which hit a window and several cars on his block. Fearing the worst, he looked down at his torso.
"I didn't see any blood," Harris said. "Then I reached in my hoodie and pulled out my wallet. [It] was shattered, ... and then there was the bullet."
The bullet pierced through his driver's license, government ID, credit cards and even dental insurance cards but never reached Harris -- it was stopped by the keycard he uses to get into work.
