Authorities are investigating allegations that disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer assaulted a woman at a Manhattan hotel, sources told NBC News. A spokeswoman for Spitzer denied the report.

Spitzer, who resigned from office in 2008 following revelations of his involvement in a prostitution ring, is accused of choking a woman in her mid-20s at the Plaza Hotel, the sources said. They said there may be video of Spitzer going up to the hotel with the woman.

Spitzer has not been charged. Lisa Linden, a spokeswoman for Eliot Spitzer, told NBC News late Sunday: "There is no truth to the allegation."

Spitzer became New York's attorney general in 1998 and established himself as a crusader against what he saw as Wall Street abuse. He served as governor for a little more than a year.

In 2013, he unsuccessfully tried to re-enter politics as New York City's comptroller.
