The FBI hopes to identify potential victims of a traveling salesman accused of videotaping himself raping girls.

Matthew Coniglio, 46, was arrested April 10 at his Georgia home on a child pornography charge. His house held a hoard of child pornography, including more than 50,000 images and videos stored on laptops, external hard drives and thumb drives. The FBI said investigators found 56 8-millimeter tapes showing Coniglio attacking girls who may have been drugged into unconsciousness.

Many of the victims' faces cannot be clearly identified, so investigators don't know how many different girls were attacked. But each tape recorded at least one assault — some had more — in homes and hotels. The youngest victim appears to be about 10 years old. Coniglio worked and lived in cities across Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

The FBI shared exclusive details of the case with The Associated Press in the hope victims will step forward and can be offered counseling.

But authorities' best chance for resolving the unanswered questions vanished April 20 — when Coniglio hanged himself in an apparent suicide inside a Georgia jail before his trial could start.
