Four Killed, 14 Seriously Hurt, Including Six Kids, in Maryland Van Crash

Truck collides with church van in fiery crash, investigation underway 1:44

At least four people, including a child, were killed Sunday afternoon when a passenger van and two other vehicles were involved in a crash in Hyattsville, Maryland, authorities said.

At least 14 other people — eight adults and six children — were seriously injured, some with life-threatening injuries, Mark Brady, a Prince George's County fire spokesman, who called the accident "horrific." Four of the adults and four of the children were in critical condition, he said.

Prince George's Fire Chief Marc Bashoor told reporters that a pickup truck collided with another vehicle before speeding down the road on fire. A witness told NBC Washington that the flaming truck then smashed into a van full of people.

Bashoor told NBC station WBAL of Baltimore that some motorists were trapped in their vehicles for a while Sunday evening.

The Hyattsville Fire Department said its prayers were with the victims and their families. It said first responders from across the region responded to what it called "a tough, horrific scene unlike many have seen in the Hyattsville area for decades, if ever."
