A Georgia fugitive's 48 years on the run are over, federal law enforcement officials said.
The U.S. Marshals Service said escapee Robert E. Stackowitz was arrested without incident in Connecticut on Monday.
Stackowitz was serving a 17-year sentence for robbery by force when he escaped the infirmary at the Carroll County Prison Work Camp in Carrolton, Georgia, on Aug. 22, 1968, according to authorities.
Investigators caught a break when they discovered a possible alias for the 71-year-old escapee. The alias led police to an address in Sherman, Connecticut.
Stackowitz was arraigned Tuesday morning at Danbury Superior Court and is being held on $100,000 bond in Bridgeport, Connecticut, while he awaits extradition back to Georgia.
Stackowitz was known around Sherman as "Bob Gordon," according to NBC New York. He had been running a boat repair business.
Gwendolyn Hogan, spokeswoman with the Georgia Department of Corrections, said authorities received leads on Stackowitz's location and reopened their cold case investigation five months ago. Officials do not yet know how he made it to Connecticut or how long he was living there, Hogan said.
Sherman is a rural town in Connecticut with a population of about 3,500.
