Man Arrested in Killings of Two Adults, Baby in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City police have arrested a man suspected in the killings of two adults and a 2-month old child Friday.

Police on Saturday identified the victims as Heike Poike, 50, Lyric Poike , 2 months old, and Dakota Smith, 28.

All three were found shot to death in their N. Sir Philip Drive home Friday night, and a man who lived in the basement of the home, Alexander Tran, 22, was arrested in the killings, NBC station KSL reported Saturday.

Police said they were trying to find the family of an 8-year-old boy who hadn’t been at school in recent days and discovered the killings. The 8-year-old is a sibling of Lyric’s, police told the station, and has been placed with family members, the station reported. It is unclear where the 8-year-old boy was found.

“They went into the house and were calling out to anyone inside and they found a male with a gun, so they took him into custody and then searched the house and found three bodies inside," Salt Lake City police Detective Richard Chipping told the station.

A motive in the killings was not released. Tran lived in the basement of the home and was renting the upstairs to the victims, KSL reported.

Tran is charged with aggravated murder and was being held at Salt Lake Metro Jail Saturday, according to jail records.
