Murderer John Modie Recaptured After Escaping Ohio Prison

Convicted Murderer Escapes From Prison

A convicted murderer who triggered a manhunt after escaping from an Ohio prison over the weekend has been recaptured, officials said early Tuesday.

John Modie, who was sentenced to a minimum 15-year jail term in 2003 for kidnapping and murdering a woman, was caught “without incident” in Nelsonville, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said in a statement.

The 58-year-old was discovered missing from the nearby Southeastern Correctional Complex, about 60 miles from Columbus, during a routine count.

The public was warned to be on the lookout for Modie, who is considered dangerous. At least one nearby college campus closed Monday amid the manhunt.

The correctional department said details about his recapture were “not currently available.”
