A crowd gathered on a pedestrian bridge to watch as the historic Civic Stadium burned in Eugene, Oregon, on Monday.

"There was easily a thousand people lining the street watching it," Jeff Oliver of Eugene told NBC News. "People didn't want to leave. They wanted to get that last memory."

The stadium was approved by voters in 1938 during the Great Depression and opened that same year. The cause of the fire remained undetermined.
