A small plane crashed Sunday in the rugged mountains outside Sedona, Arizona, killing four people on board and igniting a brush fire that continued to grow as night fell, local authorities said.
Hikers in the Bear Mountain area west of Sedona reported a possible plane crash and fire shortly before 4 p.m., the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. Firefighters were initially unable to locate any wreckage, but eventually spotted “a downed single-engine plane with four fatalities.”
There was no immediate word on where the flight originated or its destination nor any information on the occupants.
The Red Rock News of Sedona reported that the fire had grown to 20 acres by early evening and was continuing to burn in the Fay Canyon.
