Target security guard fatally shoots person after 2 people were stabbed, including a child, in 'unprovoked' attack, L.A. police say

The suspect was arrested and died of his injuries later, police said.

At least two people, one of them a child, were stabbed at a Target in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday night in an attack that ended with a security guard fatally shooting the attacker, authorities said.

Police were called to reports of a shooting at around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Officers arrived to find at least two victims, a 9-year-old boy and a 25-year-old woman, suffering from stab wounds, with another person who had been shot, police said. The conditions of the two people who were stabbed were not immediately clear early Wednesday.

Addressing reporters in an update aired by CBS Los Angeles, Police Chief Michel Moore said the suspect, who appeared to be homeless, carried out the attack with a large kitchen knife.

Moore said the suspect first approached the child and told him "that he was going to stab him and kill him."

"He repeated that more than once," Moore said.

The child tried to flee, but the attacker "without any further provocation" stabbed the child in the back, he said.

Witnesses tried to help the child while the attacker continued his rampage, stabbing the woman "brutally in the chest," Moore said.

Moore said the attack ended when a security officer employed by Target shot the attacker. He said the security officer initially tried to use a baton but eventually fired at least one shot as the attacker advanced with the knife.

The suspect, whose name hasn't been released, was taken into custody and died later of their injuries, police said, according to NBC Los Angeles.
