Twin 18-month-old brothers are dead after falling into a canal in Yuma, Arizona, that set off a desperate search Friday, police said.

Search and rescue teams arrived to the scene in the city's east side at 9:45 a.m. local time after reports that "two people" had fallen into the water, reported NBC affiliate KYMA. Police would not immediately say how the boys, who were not identified, fell in, but a family member was nearby. The area is routinely used by people who exercise.

Helicopters with the U.S. Border Patrol and Marine Corps joined in the search, and a Border Patrol pilot spotted the brothers before 11:20 a.m., police said. Officials, however, don't suspect foul play, according to The Associated Press.

The brothers were airlifted by a Marine Corps helicopter to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead, Yuma police spokesman Officer Joe Franklin told the AP.
