A series of small underground transformer explosions sent heavy, brown smoke pouring over a downtown Indianapolis street Wednesday afternoon, prompting evacuations and shutting down traffic in the area, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

The sound of the explosions filled the densely populated area and shook nearby windows, according to Capt. Rita Reith.

The fire department responded to reports of multiple explosions in front of the Oceanaire restaurant at 30 South Meridian St. in downtown Indianapolis at approximately 1:30 p.m. and evacuated pedestrians and all buildings in the area. The explosions stopped shortly before 2 p.m. and firefighters ventilated the tunnel.

Reith said the cause of the explosions is under investigation, and no injuries were reported.
