The wife of Joe Gliniewicz, the crooked Illinois cop who killed himself last year, was indicted Wednesday on charges of embezzling from a police charity and money laundering.
Melodie A. Gliniewicz, 51, could face as long as seven years in prison if she's convicted of the four counts of disbursing charitable funds for personal benefit and two counts of money laundering, all felonies. She was arrested and was being held Wednesday on $50,000 bond in the Lake County Jail.
Gliniewicz's husband, a Fox Lake police lieutenant, committed suicide in September as allegations of misconduct against him mounted and tried to make it look like a heroic death in the line of duty.
Melodie Gliniewicz and the couple's son soon came under suspicion as details of the bad cop's misdeeds emerged — allegations that he'd been stealing and laundering money from the Police Explorer post he ran for years and using the money for personal purchases — including adult website memberships — being drunk on the job and sexually harassing female colleagues.
The Lake County grand jury found that Melodie Gliniewicz also held a fiduciary role as an adviser with the Explorer post and that charity funds were also siphoned off to pay for a trip to Hawaii and more than 400 restaurant charges.
Gliniewicz's attorneys said in a statement that she was "devastated" by the charges.
"Melodie is a victim of her husband's secret actions and looks forward to her day in court to show the world her innocence," they said.
Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said the town and the county had "been through a mix of emotions throughout the Gliniewicz investigations" and that he hoped the developments would help with "healing and rebuilding" trust in local law enforcement.
