Police in North Carolina were in a stand-off all Sunday morning with a man who is a suspect in a killing one state over. The man later reportedly shot himself and was taken to a hospital.
The barricade situation first began at around 11 p.m. Saturday in Charlotte, when authorities were told that a vehicle in the parking lot of an America's Best Motel was wanted in connection with a murder that took place earlier that day in Greenville, South Carolina, police said.
When officers determined the wanted suspect was inside a motel room they evacuated nearby rooms, and members of the SWAT team and negotiators were activated and responded to the scene, police said.
Just before noon on Sunday, when police heard gunshots, they used explosives to get into the top floor-motel room and found the wounded suspect, NBC Charlotte affiliate WCNC reported.
Police identified the subject as Damien Williams and said he was hospitalized at Carolinas Medical Center because of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, where he was listed in critical condition.
According to WCNC, Williams is the husband of a woman who was found dead Saturday in Greenville. The woman's cause of death has not yet been determined, and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Police told WCNC that the suspect had two teens in the room with him. It was unclear who they were or what condition they were in.
