A woman and 11 children were held hostage for hours early Tuesday at a Georgia motel, NBC station WXIA reported.

The standoff ended after a SWAT team entered the Rite 4 Us Inn and Suites in DeKalb County, and the suspect stabbed himself, according to a tweet from local police.

There were no other injuries and the suspect was transferred to hospital, police said. WXIA reported that the suspect stabbed himself in the neck and was in a critical condition.

Authorities became involved in the standoff after responding to a domestic dispute call from the woman at around 2 a.m., WXIA reported. The station did not identify the suspected hostage-taker.

An employee at the motel who answered the phone when contacted by NBC News early Tuesday declined to comment.
