A third child, five-month-old Christoper Swist, was in a critical condition, police said.

Officers attending the scene found a visibly-injured woman outside the home armed with a knife. She was taken into custody and was also being treated at the hospital.

"A crime like this is beyond words," said Palm Bay police commander John Resh. "It is unthinkable that someone could do this to innocent children."

The investigation is ongoing, the police statement said.
