Julia Merfeld, the Michigan woman caught on video hiring a hitman to kill her husband, has been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.

On Tuesday, Merfeld, 21, of Muskegon, pleaded guilty to soliciting the murder of her 27-year-old husband, in lieu of divorcing him.

She was ordered to spend 5 years 8 months to 20 years in prison. The sentence came after the woman's husband pleaded for leniency.

"She is a godly woman, even so much more so now than she ever has been," her husband, Jacob Merfeld, told the judge during the sentencing hearing, according to Michigan NBC affiliate WOOD. "I know that this is a crime that is on the top of the list of the most evil, non-godly things you could probably do."

Julia Merfeld was caught on a hidden camera last April orchestrating her husband's murder to an undercover detective. Investigators say they were tipped by one of Merfeld's former coworkers, who she had previously approached for the job.

According to the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office, Merfeld was planning on using $40,000 that she would collect from her husband's life insurance to pay for the execution.

In the video, Merfeld cites the reason for killing the father of her two children, saying "It was just easier than divorcing him."
